Indian trains are famous for their lively and packed carriages taking passengers, animals, goods, luggage and plenty more across the country daily. I loved the idea of it and created a large scale mural for the long hallways of the Kaiser Oakland Replacement Hospital (California, USA) on their children’s floor.

I created several carriages following a diesel train engine and each carriage had several fun details to discover. There are passengers, animals and items all over each train.

The Kaiser Oakland Medical Center is the flagship hospital of Kaiser Permanente, the largest managed care organisation in the United States, through its Kaiser Foundation Hospitals division.

To meet California’s updated earthquake safety standards, the Oakland Medical Center was replaced in stages and had a complete overhaul. For these new facilities, Roundtree Visuals, an art licensing company for commercial buildings was looking for new art to hang into the hallways of the brand new hospital wings.

They chose my work to be part of it as they were looking for fun, quirky and long panoramic art to adorn the walls of the long hallways.

train mural installed at hospital

An image of the artwork installed in the hallway of the hospital. It was printed digitally in a final size of 8.2m x 1.5m and hung on 2 separate floors of the hospital’s children’s floor level 11 and 12. All printing was done by Roundtree Visuals, a company licensing artworks for large commercial companies.
